There are two misconceptions here. Just because a virus exists for a product does not mean that there is a need for antivirus. And that macOS needs antivirus.
The main problem on Mac is malware and especially addware. Addware is not a virus. Malware is a therm for malicious software, it includes ransomware, viruses, worms, Trojan horses etc. Addware is something that somehow got installed. Either by the user or in conjunction with another application.
A virus is a self-spreading code injection (program) that infects the OS or installed applications by exploiting vulnerabilities. This can in turn install other malware using said vulnerabilities.
But because macOS usually push updates as soon as a vulnerability is fund there really is no need for an anti virus program because I HIGHLY DOUBT that 3. Party antivirus manufacturers have more knowledge about the vulnerabilities than Apple.
Furthermore keeping the OS and applications up to date is the best thing you can do in terms of security.
That said, there are a very few number of actual viruses for macOS , none of which affect the current version of macOS. I will however not reject that there will be future viruses.
