Diskless – Server and Client installation

CCBoot is a diskless boot system that will make all of your PCs like new after every single reboot. This means, no more worrying about Spyware, Viruses, and Trojans. Every single time a PC is rebooted, it’s wiped clean, leaving you with the feeling of a fresh install after every restart. Your computers are safer AND they run faster.

Server Hardware Requirements

Hard Disk
You need at least 5 HDD’s, But if you can use SSD instead of HDD and more much better performance.

Different HDD types in CCBoot
Image Disk : The hard disk that stores the client OS boot data
Game Disk : the hard disk that store the game data.
Writeback disk : The hard disk that store the client write date. In diskless booting, all date are read and written to/from the server. So we need writeback disk to save the client’s write data.
SSD : The hard disk that used to cache game disk data. Caching game disk data in SSD give client quicker access to game files as SSD is much fastger than traditional HDD

First install the operating system on your server I used windows server 2012, you can click this link for Windows Server 2012 installation. And for anti-virus click here, Then we will proceed for HDD preparation.

Here’s my target setup
Local Disk (C
) – Server Operating System
Drive D : CCboot Image and CCBot installation folder
Drive H : Writeback , i only have 60gb SSD but the higher capacity the better.
Drive Q : For Gamedisk, game disk require quite a bit read speed to achieve this by using two hard disk you have to set and configure to RAID O in windows operating system (software RAID). There is no need to use raid card. Or you can use 500 GB SSD it depend how many games you want to install.
Drive J : SSD Cache



Network Design

HDD Preparation
  • Open the Server Manager click Tools click Computer Management, click Disk Management
Then create your image,writeback,game disk and SSD cache



NOTE:
File system
: NTFS (default)
Allocation unit size : select 32k for all HDD

Write-back
Right click your HDD for writeback disk click format, under Volume labelinput Writeback. Then set the allocation unit size to 32k. Then click okay to proceed the format.
To the same procedure for Gamedisk,image and SSD cache

CCBoot Server Installation

Download CCBoot server Click here to download , that is a Trial version that can support 5 PCs. But you can purchase the license if you have more than 5 PCs, you can inquire directly on that website you may contact me.
Double click the downloaded installer(ccbootsetup.exe), click RUN
and install CCBoot Server on your Image Disk (Drive D)
Click Next 3 times and click install. Wait the installation to finish and restart your Server.

CCBoot Disk Manager
Now lets configure Image, writeback, Gamedisk and SSD Cache under CCBoot Server
Open your CCBoot Server, at the left panel click Disk Manager ( all your available HDD will display on the righ side)
Remember the setting we did on Server management? We will now apply that setting on CCBoot Server
D:\ Image Disk
H:\ Writeback (SSD)
Q:\ Gamedisk
J:\ SSD Cache

Image disk
On the right panel under Disk double click the HDD D: then fill-up the following information
Type = Image
RAM Cache = 1024 (if you are using 8gb to 32gb of RAM)
and click okay

Writeback disk
Double click the Drive H
then fill-up the following information
Type = Writeback
RAM Cache = 1024 (if you are using 8gb to 32gb of RAM)
and click okay

SSD Cache
Double click the Drive J
then fill-up the following information
Type = SSD
RAM Cache = 1024 (if you are using 8gb to 32gb of RAM)
and click okay

Game Disk
Double click the Drive Q
then fill-up the following information
Type = Game
RAM Cache = 1024 (if you are using 8gb to 32gb of RAM)
SSD Cache = 365824
Client Drive = Select any letter available (I choice Drive T)
and click okay

Download Windows 10 Image for client PC
Download Optimize Windows 10 OS image click here and extract to your image disk.

Adding image to CCBoot Server
In CCBoot server right click the Image Manager click add image. Under Image Name type win 10. Under Image Path locate your windows 10 image that was save on Image disk in Drive D. Then click okay. If you have windows 7 image same procedure just type win 7 under Image name and locate your image under Image Path.



DHCP Setting
If you have DHCP server running in your network or in your router disable first. And we will use DHCP on CCBoot server. To open the DHCP server, at the upper left corner of CCBoot server click Options and click DHCP Settings tab.
In this demo i used the following detail, you can change this depend on that IP you use.
DHCP Server IP = 192.168.1.110 (This is the IP address of your CCBOT server/Windows Server 2012 )

IP Allocation Start = 192.168.1.112
IP Allocation End = 192.168.1.120
IP Mask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 192.168.1.111 (IP address of your router/modem)
DNS Address 1/2 = you can use Google DNS that is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Backup and Restore

Rule of thumb, always make a backup first before making any changes on your system. Your backup files should be save outside your CCBoot server, you can save it to your external drive if you have

How to create backup?
In your CCBoot Server click Tools then click Backup Settings, type your desire filename and location then click save. By default backup files was located in ccboot backup folder

How to restore your setting using backup files
In you CCBoot Server, click tool then click Restore Settings. Browse your backup file and click Open. And you will receive a notification “ Restoring settings was successful

Adding Client PC
At the upper left side click Client Manager, from there you have multiple option to add Client PC, you can do it manually my entering Client MAC address or by auto scan since we enable DHCP in this server auto scan is much easiest way to add client PC.

Right click Client Manager then click Auto Scan and click Start. It will show all PC that connected on you network , be sure all PC is Turn On.



If you have multiple Image OS for client, you can manually adjust what OS you want to use for every client PC, this is common if you have different type of Motherboard.

Be sure to select the correct Image for your Client PC.



If you encounter PXE error while on booting the Client PC edit the PXEtype on Client PC under CCBoot Server, to do it double click the Client PC and change the PXE type the default value is gpxe.exe change to gpxex.pxe. Then try to boot again the client PC.



Boot the client PC, go to device manager to check if all driver was successfully installed, check if you have network connection by using PING command. If you need to update or install the right driver you need to enable the super client in Client PC. After the change do not forget to disable the super client.
Super Client is use if you have adjustment on Client PC like adding games, applying game patch etc.

How to enable Super Client
At the CCboot Server click the Client Manager and right click the Client PC that you want to use for modification or you want to update the setting or games then click Enable Super Client.
To disable super client just select Disable Super Client



Important: Before you enable super client for any computer, please make sure that you have enough space free in the “Image Disk”. To be safe, have atleast 10-20 GB free.
When you disable super client but your changes are not saving, then you need to unmount any virtual harddisk attached on the server.
