SAFE SETTINGS FOR COMPIZ ON UBUNTU AND DERIVATIVES RUNNING GNOME-PANEL

1. Download compizconfig-settings-manager and compiz-fusion-plugins-extra
2. Open Compizconfig settings manager by going to Applications>System Tools>Preferences>Compizconfig settings manager
3. Click on General Commands under the General Header
4. Click on the Desktop Size Tab
5. For a cubed desktop change the Horizontal Virtual Size to 4, Set the Vertical Virtual Size and Number of Desktops to 1.
6. Click the back button on the bottom right of the window
7. Move down to the Desktop Header
8. Click the Desktop Cube check box. On the popup windows select disable wall, enable OpenGl, enable composite, if they popup.
9. Click the Rotate Cube checkbox.
10. Click the Expo check box.
11. Click the Viewport Switcher checkbox.
12. (Optional)Now click on the words Desktop Cube. I like the cube with no top or bottom so I click on the Appearance tab and under Cube Cap Colors where it says Top go to the right and click on the rectangle color chooser box and click it. On the popup window slide the Opacity bar all the way to the left and click ok. Now click on Bottom and do the same thing as you did for top. Now you can click the Transparent Cube tab up top and play with the top two selections moving the numbers up and down to see how they affest the cube appearance.You wont notice any change with the top option until we actually rotate the cube later.
13. Click back on the bottom left of the Window.
14. Still working under the Desktop header click on the words Viewport Switcher.
15. Click on the Desktop-based Viewport Switching tab
16. NOTE: This will allow Activating and rotating the cube with a mouse with a middle scroll button or the mouse click buttons on a touchpad. Click on the Disabled button for Move Left and on the popup window click the checkbox next to Enabled. Down where it says Button 1 click the little down arrow and clck on Button4. now click OK. Now click on the Disabled button for Move Right and on the popup window click the checkbox next to Enabled. Down where it says Button 1 click the little down arrow and clck on Button5. now click OK. Now click on the Disabled button for Initiate plugin action and on the popup window click the checkbox next to Enabled. Down where it says Button 1 click the little down arrow and clck on Button2. now click OK.
17. Click back on the bottom left of the Window.
18. Now move down to the Effects header.
19. Click the check boxes next to 3D Windows, Animations, Animations Add-ons, Cube Reflection and Deformation, Window Decoration, and Wobbly Windows.
20. Still under the Effects header click on the words Cube Reflection and Deformation. These are personal preferences, to finish having no top or bottom on the cube click on each image name under the Image files bars and click delete. Now click on the word Behavior. Uncheck the boxes for Draw top face and Draw bottom face. Now click the Deformation tab up top. Now next to Deformation where it says Cylinder click the little down arrow and select None.
21. Click back on the bottom left of the Window.
22. Move down to the Window Management header.
23. Make sure the following are checked, Place Windows, Put, Scale, Move Window, Resize Window.
24. Click Close on the bottom left of the Window.
25. Now to test it out. On a mouse with scroll button scroll up and down and the desktop should rotate/flip left and right. If yo click and hold the scroll button and move the mouse left and right you should see the cube and it should move around. On a touchpad click both buttons at the same time and hold them down and move a finger around on the touchpad and the cube shoud activate and move around. If all went well you are done with stable settings and have Compiz Cube.
26. There are many more effects that you can do to compiz and the effects, these are the most stable and simple steps to get you up and running.
